KING & COUNTRY INTERVIEW INTERVIEW OONA KING SAYS THAT GORDON

IT is Sunday, March 23, 1997, and Oona King has just been selected as the Labour candidate for Bethnal Green and Bow, an east London constituency with a huge Muslim population. She is 29 years old and feels many things all at once. Astonishment. Joy. Mostly, though, relief. She is relieved that her life is going to turn out the way she has planned. Since she was a small child, her whole existence has been geared towards becoming a Labour MP and, eventually, prime minister. Blame her mother, the teacher and single parent. Blame her father, the exiled son of a family of African- American civil rights activists. Whatever the reason nature, nurture or simple ego King has never doubted her destiny. The mother of all parliaments had better brace itself for a new and driven daughter.
